This is my first ever request, and it was an interesting one. My friend Gene Burmington asked that I make a sort of theme that was as stereotypically girly as possible to (and I paraphrase from memory) “capture the essence and beauty of femininity”. It’s definitely a new type of feel for me, but then, I love this sort of melody. Like a nice little ballerina-themed lullaby.

Written & recorded with Sibelius; mixed with Audacity.

Taiga Soundtrack (#6)

This is part of a little soundtrack I was asked to compose for an upcoming RPG named Taiga by friend Douglass Hughes. The game is set to have a dark, creepy, minimalistic feel, and I did my best to characterize it with the reduced instrumentation I was asked to use.

At one point, the player emerges from the forest to arrive at the imposing home of “God”, a man who created the local town and possesses vast powers. God is described as being “silly, sarcastic and mean”, and this corresponding tune plays on while the player explores his grand dwelling.

Written & recorded with Sibelius.

Note: Song is subject to being modified at a later date as the game is finalized.

This is part of a little soundtrack I was asked to compose for an upcoming RPG named Taiga by friend Douglass Hughes. The game is set to have a dark, creepy, minimalistic feel, and I did my best to characterize it with the reduced instrumentation I was asked to use.

This track plays during the player’s meeting with the Deity Fox, a powerful but frustrated being who is quite unhappy with her current living arrangements. The song is meant to segue from ‘Forest’ during the tense encounter.

Douglass asked me to split the old ‘Forest and Snow’ in two for more technical reasons, so I redesigned the ‘Forest’ part into this. It’s made to segue seamlessly into ‘Meeting Deity’ when the player encounters the Deity Fox deep in said forest.

This is an early version of the track ‘Danger’ for my soundtrack to Taiga, but the game’s creator, friend Douglass Hughes, wanted something more tense and less adventuresome. I’m uploading it anyway because I like how it turned out, even though it won’t appear in the game or on the actual Soundtrack.

Douglass wanted this song as a mere test to see if she could fit a ‘music box’-type theme in the game, so I made it shorter and simpler, as a sort of preview. She ended up accepting it as-is. I so love these simple, melancholic melodies. She later decided to make this the credits song.

This is basically the “miscellaneous” theme, playing whenever the player is walking around or doing whatever that doesn’t trigger any of the other themes. It was meant to be sort of an extension to the ‘Main Theme’, only more fleshed out.

The Path to War Soundtrack | James’s Theme

The Path to War Soundtrack
James’s Theme
Composed by Joé McKen
Posted: [c. 2009] | Last updated: 05/26/12

(Adobe Flash required for audio player)

This is part of my soundtrack for my planned novel, The Path to War, which has been on the backburner since my early teen years.

This is the theme for protagonist James Hania. The origins of this theme date back a few years now previous to the song itself, to a very simple piano melody that eventually became ‘Lone Wolf’, and then, the main theme for TPtW. The kindness, honor and purity I tried to make present in this theme represent him well as a man who just wants the best for himself and those he cares for, despite all the hardships he continually endures.

Written & recorded with Sibelius; mixed with Audacity.

Ol’ chum Veritas (@VeritasKnight) recently asked me to whip up a theme for some sort of superhero roleplaying game. The melody for this piece came surprisingly fast, but the rest of the song needed long bouts of noggin-scratching before I finally hammered out the details and fine-tuned the sound to where I wanted it.

Request from Gene Burmington
Leading Man Main Theme
Composed by Joé McKen

(Adobe Flash required for audio player)

This is my half of an exchange I made with Gene Burmington. He asked me to compose a “main theme” for a story of his involving man who suddenly finds himself back in an alternate WWI-era England, where he’s forced to join the RAF and help out whilst getting involved in a steamy romance with a female pilot.

As with his story, the overlying themes for this piece are war and military, romance, and a bit of danger. He originally requested I make it sound sorta early 1900s-ish, but I chose not to on account that 1900s-era music sucks. (And because I can’t write it, anyway.) I’m quite pleased with how the piano turned out; it’s been a longstanding goal of mine. Also got to use the bassoon for the first time. It’s more versatile than I thought.

Written & recorded with Sibelius.

  1. 03/17/12: Made a number of revisions, including some instrumentation and sounds (namely piano and cymbals), shortened the edgy middle a little, and a few technical details. The middle still sounds too long and repetitive, but heck if I know how to change or shorten it without throwing its progression out of whack.

Okay, I’ll admit it, I was inspired to write this by a certain TV show’s theme song (and that’s all the clues you’re getting). I made it my own and turned it into a little piano duet-type piece. I’m rather fond of how it turned out.

I just felt like writing something for a hypothetical scene: A character prepares to set sail for a distant destination early at dawn, shares an emotional goodbye with a friend or loved one, then departs across majestic stretches of ocean, or maybe some glacial fjords (’cause they’re really pretty). That’s really all there is behind this one. (I’ll admit, I do like the little piano riff.)
